Sanko Inari Jinja Shrine
Rows of red torii gates famous as a shortcut to Inuyama Castle
Historic Sanko Jinja Shrine lies at the base of the mountain Inuyama Castle occupies. Inuyama's Sanko Jinja Shrine has also long been known as "Sankoji Temple", and for just as long, has been revered by many coming from the local area as well as from far and wide to worship.
Every year on July 22, a grand festival is held with red hozuki paper lanterns hanging on the tips of bamboo grass, lighting the way for families on their way to pray at the shrine. Also on the day of the festival, lantern-lit warabune boats float downstream along the Kiso River to musical performances. The scene as they float with their lanterns mirrored off the river's surface is surreal and beloved as a summer highlight in Inuyama.
Himeki Jinja Shrine too is located on Sanko Inari Jinja Shrine's premises, where you can pray for better relations with the opposite sex, a harmonious family life, and happy marriage.
Many worshippers flocking to see the row after row of torii gates and to write their wishes on the heart-shaped ema boards are young couples, but it certainly is a great outing for married couples too.
And since Sanko Inari Jinja Shrine is an inari shrine—known for its divine intervention in bounty—it is especially suited to gaining commercial prosperity. Put some money into a seive and wash it at the purification washing area, and it is said that the amount will come back to you in double.
And to the side of the Main Hall is the Omokaru Stone. Close your eyes and stand in front of the stone as you think of what you would like to wish for, and when you pick it up and it feels light, your wish may come true—or so superstition goes. Save up all your wishes for a visit to Sanko Inari Jinja Shrine.
