If you're sightseeing in the Inuyama area, one spot you simply cannot miss is the national treasure Joan Teahouse and its home in Urakuen Japanese Garden. And, it's right next door to luxurious Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden, making for easy access.
Joan Teahouse was actually built by Oda Urakusai, tea master and younger brother to famous Shogun Oda Nobunaga. The teahouse was designated a national treasure in 1936 and is one of Japan’s surviving three finest teahouses. Simple in its design in accordance with Tea Ceremony rules, it has a low, wooden shingle capped roof covering soft-yellowed walls of wattle and daub clay-covered bamboo lattices.
The surrounding Urakuen Garden was moved to the east of neighboring national treasure Inuyama Castle in 1972, recreating the style of Japanese gardens in ancient Kyoto. See the inside of the teahouse once a month with advance reservations—a truly rare and worth-while experience.

Believe it or not, Joan isn't the only teahouse in Urakuen Garden. In addition to important cultural property Former Shoden-in Study, you'll find Gen-an Teahouse, reconstructed based off of ancient illustrations; and Koan Teahouse, newly built for tea ceremony.
The stone water basin at Koan Teahouse's front lets you wash and purify your hands as you enjoy the pristine sounds of the water as it falls to the ground below you. The graceful sound is matched only by the serenity all around you.

Japanese sweets and matcha before a beautiful view

The sweets and matcha tea set available at Koan Teahouse is a popular one enjoyed by many. Inuyama ware teacups and other pottery offer seasonal flavors only available at Urakuen Garden as a serene scene sprawls before you. The Japanese confections served are seasonal and change throughout the year.
