Former Oguri Family Residence
A mansion left by one of Handa’s leading wealthy merchants, said to have been built in the early Meiji period
Presumed to have been built in the early Meiji period, this store and mansion belonged to the Oguri family, one of the wealthiest merchant families in Handa, who ran a brewing business.
The main building is a two-story building with a hipped roof and a tiled roof, and the road side surrounded by majestic latticework that creates the atmosphere of an old family home was once used as the former headquarters office of the Mansan Shoten shop.
The back of the building is an expansive residential area, which is connected to the shop area by a dirt floor. The social status of the house is enhanced by a majestic 3.6 m-wide wooden platform at the front of the entrance to the residence, and by the thick beams with conspicuous grain in vertical stripe forms that support the second floor. It was registered as a national registered tangible cultural property in 2004 due to its appearance, combining historical significance and atmosphere.
Notes:
• Observe the building from the outside as the interior is normally closed to the public.
Cute white banksia rose tree with a heart-shaped trunk in the garden
In the garden of the Oguri Family’s hous is a large approximately 150-year-old white banksia rose tree which blooms with pretty white flowers every year from mid-April to early May.
Native to China, the banksia rose is an evergreen vine rose. The white banksia rose tree of the residence was designated as a natural monument of Handa City in 2012. What makes it so unique is its shape which naturally curves into a cute heart shape. The banksia rose has a slightly sweet fragrance, and its floral language exudes the romance of first loves, purity, that special someone, and happy childhood days.
The Mansan White Banksia Rose Festival is held in the garden of the mansion, which is open to the public only during the flowering season. Also on sale is Ai Shiteru sake (the name meaning "I love you"), brewed with rose yeast, which is popular as a gift for anniversaries and Valentine’s Day.
