Birthplace of the Matsudaira clan and the splendid natural beauty of Matsudaira-go

Matsudaira-go, or Matsudaira Village, is known as the beginning of the Matsudaira clan's family line, from which Tokugawa Ieyasu—the final unifier of Japan—came. The village sits atop a gently sloping hill with Mt. Horoku and Mt. Rokusho nearby as well as the flowing Tomoe River. You may also see Japan's beloved scarlet dwarf dragonflies flying around as just some of the wildlife in the surrounding, lush nature.
Also making Matsudaira-go home are many locations tied to the Matsudaira clan, such as Matsudaira Toshogu Temple—the former residence of the Matsudaira clan—and Bodaiji Temple, more popularly known as "Kogetsuin Temple", meaning "the Temple of the High Moon".

Well water used in Lord Ieyasu's birth, said to offer divine help in longevity and childbirth

Matsudaira-Go Historical Museum

Matsudaira Toshogu Shrine worships Tokugawa Ieyasu and the founder of the Matsudaira line, Matsudaira Chikauji. The shrine premises were once the Matsudaira residence and continue to be home to the Ubu no Ido Well, whose water was carried to be used in Tokugawa Ieyasu's first bath after birth. The well water is said to offer divine intervention with long life and childbirth and is also offered to worshippers as holy water.
Right next to the shrine's Worship Hall is the Matsudaira-Go Historical Museum with relics related to the Matsudaira and Tokugawa clans, such as armor, commander and other fans used in military signals, saddles, matchlock guns, and a statue of Ieyasu. The water-filled moat and stone walls still present are said to have been built by the ninth lord of the Matsudaira Tarozaemon family, Matsudaira Naoyoshi after the Battle of Sekigahara—the defining war which helped to shape the Japan we know today.
