Otaki Gorge
(Otaki Keikoku)
Otaki Gorge is located along Niogawa River, the tributary of Tomoegawa River, in the city of Toyota near Asuke Town. Niogawa River is the resulting flow of six upstream water sources, and is rather calm until it gets to Komiyama District. From this point onward, and until it meets the Tomoegawa 1.8km away, it will descend 148 meters. This rapid and irregular flow creates various big rocks and odd stones, carving the great Otaki Valley with wonderful scenic sights.
Keikoku Gorge is also known as one of the premier scenic spots in Aichi Prefecture, being often called “The Shosenkyo of Tokai Area”- Shosenkyo being a gorge in Yamanashi Prefecture considered the most beautiful of such places and an absolute reference in Japan. In autumn the trees will get tinted in their gorgeous warm colors, occasion for the “Otaki Gorge Maple Festival”, and in the summer it is a constantly sought-after spot for family and friends outings for leisure or barbecue parties. A paved pathway goes along the flow offering visitors access to the most hidden and beautiful locations along it, so it is not uncommon to see people bringing "Obento" lunch boxes for a picnic amidst the vibrant nature.
Places:
•Otaki Gorge (王滝渓谷 Otaki Keikoku) - The entire area surrounding the river.
•Otaki Lake Park (王滝湖園地 Otaki Koenchi) - The grassy open area north of the Otaki Lake, where the river bed expands and is crossed by the Otaki Lake Suspended Bridge (王滝湖かけ橋 Otakiko Kakehashi). Also where the Barbecue Fireplaces are set.
•Hiking Course (ハイキングコース) - The scenic hiking path that goes along the tortuous river flow path.
•Miyagawa Stroll Path (宮川散策道 Miyagawa Sansakudo) - Takes explorers to the large boulder tunnel, and to where the rapids get the more agitated. At the northern end of the path, there's the Komiyama Park (古美山園地 Komiyama Enchi) where locals practice bouldering.
