Inuyama-City Sanko Inari Jinja Shrine
Rows of red torii gates famous as a shortcut to Inuyama Castle
Historic Sanko Jinja Shrine lies at the base of the mountain Inuyama Castle occupies. Inuyama's Sanko Jinja Shrine has also long been known as "Sankoji Temple", and for just as long, has been revered by many coming from the local area as well as from far and wide to worship.
Every year on July 22, a grand festival is held with red hozuki paper lanterns hanging on the tips of bamboo grass, lighting the way for families on their way to pray at the shrine. Also on the day of the festival, lantern-lit warabune boats float downstream along the Kiso River to musical performances. The scene as they float with their lanterns mirrored off the river's surface is surreal and beloved as a summer highlight in Inuyama.
