Aichi Prefectural Yatomi Wild Bird Sanctuary
A treasure trove of Japan's rare birds
The area where the Aichi Prefectural Yatomi Wild Bird Sanctuary lies—between the Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi River deltas and the Shonai River delta—is a stopover for a variety of rare birds in Japan with many aquatic. The sanctuary is actually part of the Nabeta Town area in Yatomi City, an area possible due to land reclamation, and offers the perfect environment for such birds. Great cormorants, kingfishers, Eurasian goshawks, and spot-billed ducks are just some of the wild birds you'll find here.
Observe wild birds up-close
You can observe around 100 varieties of birds year round here. If you're looking for large binoculars for some casual bird-watching, head to the third floor. You'll have the tools to view more shy birds way off in the distance. Or take part in the variety of events held at the Aichi Prefectural Yatomi Wild Bird Sanctuary to even further enjoy yourself.
Plus, on weekends and national holidays, members of the Aichi Prefecture Wild Japanese Birds Fanclub offer guidance on birds from the third floor as you observe them.
New worlds unfold before your eyes
The sanctuary offers a variety of environments birds inhabit, such as woodland, grassland, ponds, prairieland, reed swamps, and canals. However, to keep this pristine environment inviting to the variety of birds, visitors are not normally allowed in. Even so, you can enjoy access twice a month during the Mini Bird-watching Session and Bird-watching Session.
Walk an approximate one-kilometer or two-kilometer course running through the sanctuary as you observe the birds with members of the Aichi Prefecture Wild Japanese Birds Fanclub and establishment staff there to offer guidance. Binoculars are available for rental.
