Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens and Higashiyama Sky Tower
The world of nature surrounded by a urban jungle
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens is an expansive, approximately 60 hectares of space with a zoo, botanical gardens, amusement park, and Higashiyama Sky Tower for a great gaze over its entirety and surrounding Nagoya City.
The largest number of specimens with around 450 varieties of animal
Higashiyama Zoo is home to koalas—just as beloved since their arrival in 1984—and Shabani, a western lowland gorilla whose good looks have all who gaze upon him ooh and ahh. But they are just some of the residents; you also have tiny killifish and gigantic elephants, plus almost everything in between.
The newer African Forest enclosure with gorillas and chimpanzees as well as the Asian elephant enclosure offer inhabitants some of the most expansive spaces in Japan, letting you observe the animals in their natural habitat.
Some 7,000 varieties of plant life put you at peace
Higashiyama Botanical Gardens makes use of its forested hill environment to display some 7,000 varieties of plant life and the various views offered by the four seasons. The Great Green House which has been with the establishment since its foundation is designated a national important cultural heritage and is the oldest greenhouse in all of Japan.
Take in 1,000 cherry trees of 100 varieties and their beautiful blossoms creating a floral tunnel as well as 60 different types of 200 maple trees located around a Japanese garden and Oku Pond. But there's more. You can also enjoy the beauty of a plum grove, camellia garden, rose garden, fields of flowers, and other seasonal delights. At Oku Pond, you'll find a building of traditional, rural construction relocated from famous Shirakaga-go Village in Nagano Prefecture to add to the pristine Japanese landscape.
All of Nagoya in one view at Higashiyama Sky Tower
Higashiyama Sky Tower stands on an approximate 80-meter-tall hill with an observation deck 100 meters from the ground, making for beautiful scenes a total of 180 meters in the sky. Behold such sights as Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER, Nagoya Dome, and other landmarks of Nagoya City. If the conditions are just right, you can even see as far as Mt. Otake in neighboring Gifu Prefecture and the Suzuka Mountains in Mie Prefecture.
As you might expect from such sensational sights, the views are designated a Night View Heritage of Japan and one of Japan's Top 100 Night Views.
