Seaside Literary Memorial Museum
(Umibe No Bungaku Kinenkan)
A Symbol for the Picturesque Area of Gamagori, Maintained as a Memorial for Great Literary Names
With scenic qualities that have been even sung in famous songs such as the “Tetsudo-Shoka” (a collection of songs about famous Japanese places connected by railways, lit. “Railway Songs”), the city of Gamagori, and especially the coastal area around Takeshima Island, has long been known for being a much sought-after resort destination in the Tokai Region.
Special attention should be given to the Gourmet Ryokan Joban-kan (Ryori Ryokan Joban-kan), built in the late Meiji era. Being quite impressive, the sights observable from its vantage point were deemed so unique that, during the Taisho and Showa eras, countless novelists, playwrights, poets and essayists sought it out. Literary giants such as Hiroshi Kikuchi, Naoya Shiga, Junichiro Tanizaki, Yuzo Yamamoto, Yasunari Kawabata, and Yasushi Inoue all eventually portrayed the simple beauty of Joban-kan, Takeshima Island, and the Gamagori Seaside within their widely acclaimed masterpieces.
The Seaside Literary Memorial Museum honors this cultural heritage by reproducing the feel of the Joban-kan, with displays of memorabilia ranging from Nobel Prize recipient Yasunari Kawabata, to works from two Gamagori naturals, Masamitsu Miyagitani, a Naoki Prize winner, and Keiichiro Hirano, awardee of the Akutagawa Prize, among others.
The facility has a unique feature that attracts quiet but steady popularity, called “The Time Letter” (Toki-tegami) - by using this special delivery service, visitors are able to send a letter that will be delivered from 2 months to 10 years in the future.
