Nagoya City Archives
(former Nagoya High Court)
A precious piece of cultural heritage used as a location for movies and dramas
Nagoya City Archives lies along the city's Cultural Path, dotted by many of the city's cultural spots. It was built in 1922 with the original purpose of Nagoya's court of appeals as well as the local and district court. The location was the judiciary of the greater Chubu area, in which Nagoya is located, until 1979 when Nagoya's high court and local court found a new home in the city's 1-chome area of San no Maru, Naka Ward. From 1989, it would go on to be used as Nagoya's public archives; preserving, collecting, and making available to the public the city's official documents.
The Nagoya City Archives is highly regarded for its historical cultural values and the building itself is designated a national important cultural property.
A sense of yesteryear remains alive as an important cultural property
The most elegant room of Nagoya City Archives would have to be the restored Meeting Room. The room and its interior have been designated a national important cultural property. The nearly 45-m2 room's single carpet, chandelier, curtains, wallpaper, tables, chairs, and other items from the time the building was established have all been restored.
The stained glass at the central staircase too has been renovated back to the time of the building's birth. You can also admire the beautiful plastered, marble-painted walls and other interior aspects only possible thanks to skilled techniques. The Nagoya City Archives building is simply something you must see once in your life.
A precious piece of cultural heritage used as a location for movies and dramas
The building is even able to catch the eyes of passersby from afar with the neo-baroque architecture atop a glorious, green lawn. The marriage of red bricks and white granite makes for a vivid facade. The marble staircase, Meeting Room, and courtroom have all been resurrected, but that's not all; every aspect of the building has been worked on to bring back the atmosphere of its heyday. Even the paint is the same as that originally used. All of these minute details are renowned to the point of being sought after for use as the location for movies and dramas.
