Kamagaki no Komichi Street
A pottery wall alley you'll only find in Seto
The "kamagaki", or "pottery wall" as it is referred to in Japanese, is made of stacked-up old tools you would find in a pottery kiln. The sight is found nowhere else in Japan than in Seto City. The wall spans nearly 400 meters along a "komichi", or "street", making the—you guessed it—Kamagaki no Komichi Street.
Since long ago, the path was a main street used to transport pottery and ceramics, and thus remains the location of many kiln owners' homes, allowing a peak into what this pottery city's past. Along the surrounding Hora Town's section of the street, you can even learn about local history and culture at the Kamagaki no Komichi Museum.
Captivated by bathtubs and toilets?
The Kamagaki no Komichi Gallery makes its home in a renovated kiln which fired pottery the old, authentic way in the later half of the Meiji period. The main house highlights the history and culture of the surrounding Hora Town area while authentic clay tiles which dominated Meiji- and Taisho-period Japan decorate the bathroom and a toilet displays Seto-style illustrated tiles, making for unexpected eye-catchers. Who ever thought you'd ooh and aah over a bathroom and restroom?!
Bargains to be had at the Hora Town Kamagaki no Komichi Festival
Geometric patterns decorate the pottery wall as an air of Seto's yesteryear blows through Hora Town. It is also the setting for the Hora Town Kamagaki no Komichi Festival, where three venues, including the museum, offer original pieces by local artists on display and available for purchase in addition to free adzuki bean soup with rice cakes. Of particular interest are the Kiln Market and Chinese Zodiac Market. Get incredible deals on precious pieces at unbelievable prices.
