Toyokawa Citizens Festival - Toyokawa Tezutsu Fireworks Festival (Toyokawa Shimin Matsuri - Toyokawa Tezutsu Matsuri)
Date: Aug 24,2019(Sat)
400 fire-spewing cannons in an exhilarating demonstration!
The Toyokawa Tezutsu Festival (豊川手筒まつり Toyokawa Tezutsu Matsuri) was first held in 1988, as part of the commemorations for the city's 45 years as a municipality, being held in high esteem by the Toyokawa locals as one of the popular "Toyokawa Citizen's Festivals." Guilds representing the shrines of each of the city's districts, each with their own traditional techniques in fireworks cannon-making, all gather for a massive ceremony and festival where over 400 of those intimidating blasters are fired, making for an staggering and fulfilling experience.
The tezutsu cannons used in the festival are handcrafted by the men who will hold them at the stage during the event, in a ritualistic procedure due to the religious nature of the event. As such, it is believed that the expended cannons serve as protective amulets and are sought for decorative household items. Guests are able to purchase them at the tent located near the stage for a small fee. Sizes and quality vary, but many choices are available. Try to get one as souvenir of this magnificent show!
