The Nagoya Maritime Museum and the Fuji Antarctic Museum are two educational spots to learn about both how the Port of Nagoya contributes to the livelihood of the city, and the natural world of the seas.

The theme of the Nagoya Maritime Museum is the Port of Nagoya being Japan's foremost international trade port. In Japan, as an island nation, many of the goods that support the Japanese, such as food and energy, are transported from overseas sources by ship. The Port of Nagoya, which ranks in first place for various metrics in Japan, such as the total cargo volume handled, is like a gigantic station. You can learn about the port from various perspectives, such as actual exhibits, panoramic models, and realistic simulator equipment.
The experience of taking the helm on a ship-handling simulator used by navigators during training is an exciting moment, enabling you to feel like a captain. You can also experience in CG the operation of a gantry crane that loads and unloads cargo. Adults and children alike are captivated by the experience.

For 18 years since 1965, the Former Antarctic Observation Ship Fuji has been permanently based at the Port of Nagoya Garden Pier as an icebreaker used in Antarctic research. With its interior preserved as it was when it was in active service, you can get an idea of the role played by the vessel, the nature of Antarctica, the history and significance of Antarctic research, and its achievements under the theme of exploring the wake of the Fuji and the charms of Antarctica. Through exhibits making full use of real objects and images, you can experience the wake traced by the Fuji and the realistic appearance of Antarctica.

Former Antarctic Observation Ship Fuji

In March 2017, the large orange vessel Fuji, which stands out vividly in the Port of Nagoya, underwent a complete renovation. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the Gokukan Dramatic Theater. Four large screens located in front, on both sides, and on the floor, provide a full impact experience of crossing the Antarctic Ocean on the Fuji. This is an opportunity to experience a world that you won't normally see.

Access by public transport

• From Nagoya Station on the Higashiyama Subway Line, transfer at Sakae Station to a train bound for the Port of Nagoya on the Meijo Line to Kanayama, and get off at the last stop. 5-min. walk from Exit 3.
• From Meitetsu or JR Nagoya Station, get off at Kanayama Station. Change to the Meiko Subway Line bound for the Port of Nagoya, and get off at the last stop. 5-min. walk from Exit 3.
Access by car

• 15 min. from Meiko-Chuo Interchange on the Isewangan Expressway.
• 10 min. from Komei Interchange on the Nagoya Expressway.
