Shirotori Garden
Spectacular sights at a Japanese garden portraying the Chubu region's geography
Shirotori Garden is one of the largest Japanese gardens in the Tokai region of Japan, where its home in Nagoya lies. The garden even celebrates the Japanese spirit by letting those sporting kimonos enter for free during event periods as well as free photo services letting you take a picture there in front of the garden's giant trees with branches held up by intricate ropes.
A man-made hill portrays Mt. Ontake, from which a stream illustrating the Kiso River flows into a pond just like Mikawa Bay as the garden tells a story of sorts surrounding the water and geography of the greater Chubu region. You can also see alpine rivers created by waterfalls and giant boulders all without going into the mountains as well as the autumn colors of maples painting the banks of a clear stream.
The sights reminiscent of one you may find deep in the mountains are beautiful any time of the year with flowers and fall colors as well as the impressive trees adorned with ropes holding up tree branches as support from snowfall.
Shirotori—or Swan—Garden's Seiu-tei Teahouse lies in the middle of the park along the stream. Kyoto sukiya and local Owari construction styles combine forces for an authentic teahouse made from natural materials. The teahouse attempts to portray a swan as it descends from flight from overhead with a tearoom representing the head connected by a bridge, or neck, which meets with another tearoom like the body. A hall in the main structure, its two tearooms, and the chance to enjoy tea and the views from a chair on a bank in the pond are just another way to enjoy the garden.
Numerous events take place at Shirotori Garden which let you get in touch with the flowers, plant life, and Japanese culture throughout the four seasons. Guided tours are also available every Saturday, allowing you to learn about the must-see spots of the garden, the establishment's history, and even the floral and avian life which calls the garden home.
Once you know the incredible yet lesser known aspects of the garden, your walks through it become all the more vivid and memorable.
