One of LIXIL's global brands, INAX is widely known as a maker of sanitaryware ceramics which have become integrated into everyday life around the world. INAX MUSEUMS offers plenty of noteworthy sites and hands-on experiences with craftsmanship techniques developed in the traditional pottery town of Tokoname. Within the grounds are six facilities where you'll be able to encounter a versatile world of clay and ceramics centered around the keywords of discovery and legacy.
At the INAX Tile Museum you can discover the wonders of ceramics and tiles, including decorative tiles from various periods across the world, and their uses. There are over 1,000 different tiles from the Orient, Islamic tiles, Spanish, Dutch, English, Chinese and Japanese decorative tiles on display. Replicated tiles from ancient Egypt and Asia, floor tiles, wall tiles, ceiling tiles, bathroom, kitchen and fireplace tiles,…who knew there could be so many uses for tiles? Obviously someone did.
The History and Unique Qualities of Ceramics and Tile Art Gathered Together in One Place
The Kiln Plaza underwent maintenance work and reopened after three years in October 2019. The aim of this large-scale project was to restore the kiln, building, and chimney to its original appearance roughly 100 years ago and to preserve its appearance for future generations.
The outer walls and roof tiles were meticulously renewed, and the large, impressive brick kiln and the exposed cedar beams and posts were restored to appear as they would have at the time the plant was in operation. Another point of interest is the projection mapping which imitates the appearance of the kiln when it was in working condition through a fully immersive visual experience.
The Tile Museum was established when a collector of ancient tiles donated his collection to Tokoname-City. Operated by Japans’ largest home hardware company, LIXIL Corporation, makers of the INAX ceramic toilets and toilet bowls, the museum also features some 150 elaborately designed and decorated porcelain toilets from Japan’s Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods, along with more modern designed, surprising toilets. Twenty-eight key exhibits keep your attention, and even the bathroom facilities become part of the experience. This may seem above children’s understanding and interest levels, but it really is a fascinating collection, and very well displayed too.
See tile and terracotta pieces which decorated Japanese buildings in the early 1900s at the Architectural Terracotta Museum and outdoor Terracotta Park.
Through artifacts and documents, the Ceramics Lab presents the traditions and techniques of craftsmanship cultivated in the pottery town of Tokoname. Here, the Ceramics Lab consistently works towards new possibilities and innovation in the field of ceramics by studying the traditional techniques and the inherited skills of pottery production.
The museums’ Clay Works and Tiling Workshop provides you with the opportunity to make your own clay, ceramic, and mosaic tile art objects and items, including ceramic tile clock painting, Deco mosaic Art, mini ceramic toilet painting, Lustrous Clay Ball creation and more.
A restaurant serving authentic wood-fired pizza, and souvenir shops with original merchandise round out your visit to this unique museum. By the end of the day you’ll be all tiled out!
