Asuke Townscape
(Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings)
Perfect for a stroll: the good old nostalgic warmth of Asuke
The charm of Asuke lies not only in its remarkable natural beauty like that of nearby Korankei Gorge but in the old townscape where traces of a once flourishing post town remain to this day. Houses built in traditional Japanese architecture, white-walled storehouses, lattice doors, and black wood walls contribute to the atmosphere. Stroll along Manrin Alley and other beautiful side streets enveloped in nostalgic surroundings.
The town's shops too brim with individuality, such as Manlyn Bookstore and its Kura no Naka Gallery—a cafe and gallery located in a restored warehouse built almost 100 years ago—or Hirose Shigemitsu Cutlery, a long-established blacksmith dating back to the end of the Edo period, which today also features a music house and restaurant with live performances. The entire town comes together for all sorts of events which blend harmoniously with the old townscape.
