The city of Seto is one of Japan's leading kiln location beloved by fans for its beautiful pottery. Within this artistic city lies the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, where you can see a collection of some 8,800 potter pieces from ancient Jomon civilication vessels to modern works of art from Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world. The museum boasts some of the most prominent pieces on display in Japan.
Within the premises, you can create pottery for yourself in pottery-making experiences, gaze upon the kilns of yesteryear at the Kiln Memories I and II exhibits, and enjoy a pottery cup of tea at the Tosui-an Tearoom. Feel for yourself the history and culture of Japan's pottery as you experience a deeper understanding of the art form firsthand.

Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum's The World Is Made up of Ceramics exhibit

The museum displays a stunning collection of pottery from Japan, China, and other parts of the world with exhibits coming from a stock numbering nearly 500 items in its The World Is Made up of Ceramics exhibit. And each of the items displayed is the real deal. Different pieces from the overwhelming collection change at various point throughout the year, letting you see something new each time you come. Get explanations on the pieces using a guidance app on your smartphone as you take a trip around the world's various pottery cultures.

Pottery-making experiences

Staff offer easy-to-understand lectures as you make your own pieces of pottery or illustrate an unglazed plate or cup. While there is no need to make a reservation, you are free to make on in advance from the website. Choose form nine glazes for your creation and pick it—or have it shipped—up one month later after it is fired. An array of different workshops too take place at the establishment.

Parents and children can relax in a kids' corner

With 2025 renovations came a kids' corner much to the rejoice of parents bringing their children. A room covered with mat flooring for young children and a room with chairs and picture books offer fun times for little visitors. In the inner lounge are tables and chair where you can eat and drink your own boxed lunch or snacks.

Tea and cups at Tosui-an Tea Room

Within the establishment is a tea room which received a makeover in May of 2025. Savor a tea and confections—sets available at JPY 900—and matcha lattes for JPY 650 in this tea room with tables and chairs as well as a characteristic Japanese-style crawl-through doorway. Enjoy your tea in a cup created by local potters as you taste sweet treats at this must-visit tea room with a secretive ambience.

Kiln Memories I and II

View pottery from the 11th to 14th centuries excavated in the museum's premises at the exterior area's Kiln Memories I and II exhibits. Kiln Memories II in particular offers spectators a dynamic anagama—or tunnel—kiln in addition to a pottery wall mural depicting modern-day Seto which must be seen. You'll be blown away by the sights of Seto City's antiquity and middle ages to its present day all in one place.
