Akiba Festival
Date: Sep 21,2025(Sun)
The city of Chiryu's pinnacle autumn festival
Chiryu experienced a number of tragic fires during the Edo period, but one year, a single household which had been worshipping an amulet from Akiba Jinja Shrine is said to have been spared even as the fire spread all around it. The shrine was ceremonially transferred as a division of the original Akiba Jinja Shrine in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture in 1745.
What to watch for
The Akiba Festival is held annually on Sunday, mid-September. Groups of young men from six towns parade around the streets carrying wooden tamabako chests on their shoulders and singing. In the evening, they enter Chiryu Jinja Shrine and make an offering of Tezutsu handheld cannon fireworks in a courageous act. They hold the cannons with both hands from which sparks and fire soar over seven meters into the air, creating a wondrous spectacle.
