Ringing in the new year of the lunar calendar the traditional Japanese way

Setsubun is a Japanese tradition carried out when the year by the lunar calendar starts anew in spring and the Japanese make prayers for a prosperous and safe new year to come. Tsushima Jinja Shrine celebrates the festival with a bean throwing ritual, meant to scare off and dispel of any evil or misfortune. Visitors are allowed to make prayers at the Main Hall before getting on stage to throw beans out to event-goers (three times from 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm).
