A true Shinto festival

The ritual of the Daimyo Procession is carried out in order to protect Ojinjiki-sama, the spirit of Hachiojisha Shrine, while it is moved to Shimmeisha Shrine and brought back on the following day. It is believed that the sight of Ojinjiki-sama will blind onlookers, so all the lights throughout the island are turned off as Ojinjiki-sama makes its way from Hachiojisha Shrine to Shimmeisha Shrine.
On the next day, after a shamanic dance at Shinojima Island Beach, a crowd of half-naked men get into a big brawl to touch Otanagi-sama, a sacred tree which takes on the men's bad luck.

ACCESS

Access by public transport: • From Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line. Get off at Utsumi Station and take the Minamichita-cho Community Bus. Get off at Morozakiko Bus Stop and take the Meitetsu Sightseeing Boat to Shinojima Port.
• From Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu Kowa Line. Get off at Kowa Station and walk 10 min. to Kowa Port. Take the Meitetsu Sightseeing Boat to Shinojima Port.
• Take the Toyotetsu Bus's Irago Main Line from Toyohashi Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line. Get off at Irago Misaki Bus Stop and take the Meitetsu Sightseeing Boat to Shinojima Port.

Access by car: Drive for 10 min. from Minamichita Road's Toyooka Interchange to Morozaki Port. Take the Meitetsu Sightseeing Boat to Shinojima Port.
