Taketoyo-Town Nagao Area Shangiri Festival
Date : 04/11/2026 - 04/12/2026
Turning on a dime
The town of Taketoyo's Nagao area is home to six traditional Japanese parade floats and make an appearance during a festival for the area's guardian deity at Takeo Jinja Shrine. The name of the festival has changed to the "Shangiri Festival" as of 2026 after the original festival's nickname. "Shangiri" is derived from the local dialect, in turn from the formal term "shagiri", which means to rotate the parade float. The act of shangiri occurs as the floats enter and exit the shrine premises and puts crowds in a sense of awe as they gaze upon tremendous turns, making this the spectacle of the festival.
During the pre-festival the night before, the floats are adorned with lit paper lanterns as they parade the streets from Takeo Jinja Shrine to JR Taketoyo Station. The main festival offers karakuri mechanized doll performances, a children's sambanso dance performance, and a shamaness dance.
Please come using public transportation.
