Asuke's summer spectacle
Asuke Summer Festival takes place in Aichi's famous town of Asuke and its gorgeous Korankei Gorge with the origin believed to lie in the Asuke Gion Festival. Gion Festivals are held around Japan and began with the original held in Kyoto around 1,100 years ago. The festival became famous for driving away a local pandemic with the the creation of 66 pikes at Gionsha Shrine (current Yasaka Jinja Shrine in Kyoto City's Higashiyama Ward).
When the Asuke area's Gion Festival began is uncertain, but an inscription inside one of Hon Town's paper lanterns reads "1857", meaning the traditional festival has been held for at least 160 years. In the present day, each of Asuke's districts host vendor booths selling foods and drinks and decorated with paper lanterns, sealing the deal for splendid summer evenings of fireworks, dancing, and other events among Asuke's historic townscape.
