Toyokawa-City Choshoji Temple's Donki Festival

Date : 12/15/2024

  • Choshoji Temple's Donki Festival

A traditional festival you can't help but smirk at

The Donki Festival takes place in rural Shimo-Sawaki's Choshoji Temple in Toyokawa City, devoted to deity Akiba Sanjaku Daigongen, and occurs during the deity's Grand Fire Prevention Festival.
After the prayers for safety from fire, a white fox with a large wooden bell mallet, a red tengu goblin with a circular Japanese fatsia plant fan, and a blue tengu goblin with a wooden bell mallet chase down children and smear red dye on them. If smeared with the red, it is said you will be graced with good health—making this a very unusual and, at times, humorous festival.
