The oldest surviving illustrated handscrolls, available to view for a limited time

The Tale of Genji illustrated scrolls are one of the most famous scrolls of Japan and enjoy a place as one of the country's oldest such pieces still in existence. The works of art beautifully illustrate the story's world view among scenes of tranquility while also showing insight into the characters' states of mind. Poems written in fluid brush strokes adorn gorgeous paper material, helping to portray the elegance of court life in dynastic Japan even today.
In commemoration of Tokugawa Art Museum's 90th anniversary, the pieces come together for the first time in 10 years at one location in Nagoya.
