Tomoe River Goldfish Fireworks Display

Tomoe River Goldfish Fireworks Display

Tradition and excitement in a nighttime summer fireworks parade

Toyota-City

The Tomoe River Goldfish Fireworks Display was originally held from the Meiji period to around 1950 in Shobujima of the Matsudaira area of Toyota City and came back into practice as a revival of the traditional event. Each year in mid-August, young men from the area sing the old song Kumosuke Dochu as they parade through the Kugyudaira shopping street before the fireworks.
Awe-inspiring tezutsu handheld cannon fireworks, airborne fireworks, and goldfish fireworks—flames swimming gracefully through Tomoe River just like fish—put all in a festive spirit.

Fun at the Tomoe River Fireworks Display

Bazaar from 5:00 pm
Booths and food cars come together in droves while games and toys too offer fun times.

Kumosuke Dochu festivities from 5:30 pm
Long ago, aquatic goldfish fireworks were placed into a portable shrine before being lit and set into the Tomoe River. Nowadays, the fireworks are not carried in a portable shrine, but the Kumosuke Dochu custom with men singing cheerily as they stroll down the street is integral to the beginning of the fireworks display. Kumosuke is a term used for hired help transporting goods, carrying people in palanquins, and other tasks along the roads. Cheer them on as they walk along the road during the event.

Note:
• Cancellation may occur depending on the weather.

Stage events from 5:30 pm
An agriculture-themed rap, Japanese taiko drum performance, kids dances, and other lively stage performances take place.

Fireworks display from 8:00 pm
Fireworks gracefully swim along the surface of the Tomoe River like goldfish in a spectacular display. Plus, handheld, bazooka-like tezutsu fireworks and airborne fireworks launched just above your head add to the mystical colors lighting up the night sky. The fireworks become more heated as spectators nearby yell out "Wasshoi, Wasshoi! [Hurray, Hurray!]", so come and be a part of the fervor during the festivities.

Note:
• Times may vary slightly depending on the progress of other events.
