Tankororin Lantern Nights

Tankororin Lantern Nights

Cool off at one of Asuke's summer highlights

Toyota-City

During early to mid-August, tall cylindrical lanterns made of interwoven strips of bamboo and a Japanese paper covering, known as "Tankororin", line the streets of Asuke's historic townscape. Lit with candles, the flames flicker and dance behind the Japanese paper, creating a dream-like atmosphere along the historic, almost 1.5-kilometer-long townscape of Asuke during the Tankororin Lantern Nights event from early to mid-August.
The event also offers small performances held here and there throughout the townscape. From more modern guitar performances to those done by shamisen, a sort of Japanese banjo, as well as stylized traditional rakugo storytelling, the streets become even more fun to take an evening stroll.
